Trade a bank that lives and dies by interest rates

Bank of America is one of the biggest banks in America, and its profits swing with what the Federal Reserve does to rates. You can take a position on that, up or down, as a CFD on Defcofx.

The best part for active traders is the cost. The spread is just 0.06, with zero commission and no swap fees. The symbol on the platform is BOA, and you can trade from a single share.

What is Bank of America, in plain terms?

It is a giant, ordinary bank, and that is exactly why it is interesting to trade. It looks after money for around 67 million people and small businesses across the United States, and it runs four main arms: everyday consumer banking, wealth management through Merrill, corporate and investment banking, and a big trading floor.

But here is the thing that really matters if you want to trade the stock. A bank makes most of its money on the gap between two numbers: what it earns lending money out, and what it pays you to keep your money with it. That gap is called net interest income, and it is roughly half of everything Bank of America earns.

When interest rates go up, that gap gets wider, and Bank of America earns more. That one idea drives most of what you will see in the share price.

This is why traders watch the Federal Reserve so closely for this stock. BAC is what people call asset sensitive, which is just a fancy way of saying it makes more money when rates rise than it loses when they fall, at least in the short run. So a hint of rate hikes tends to help it, and a hint of cuts tends to hurt it.

The important part

What actually moves the stock?

If you remember only a handful of things before trading BAC, make it these. This is what the market is really reacting to.

01 Net interest income, the number that matters most

This is the gap we talked about: what the bank earns on loans and investments minus what it pays on deposits. It is roughly half of all revenue, so it moves the stock more than anything else. In 2025 it came to about $60.7 billion, and in the final quarter alone it was $15.8 billion, up 10% on the year before.

The simple rule: rates up, this number grows. Rates down, it shrinks. That is the whole game with BAC.

02 What the Federal Reserve is doing

Because BAC is asset sensitive, the Fed effectively sets the tone for the stock. When the Fed leans toward higher rates, BAC tends to do better than other banks. When it leans toward cuts, the bank’s income guidance usually drops and the stock lags. If you trade this name, keep an eye on the Fed’s dot plot and any change in its rate guidance.

03 How healthy the US consumer is

The consumer banking arm is one of the bank’s strongest, earning about $12.2 billion in 2025, up 14%. It covers current accounts, credit cards, car loans and mortgages for those 67 million clients. So jobs, wages, card spending and whether people are keeping up with their mortgages all feed straight into this part of the business.

04 The trading and dealmaking floor

The markets arm pulled in nearly $21 billion in sales and trading revenue in 2025, its 15th quarter in a row of year-on-year growth. When markets are busy, deals are flowing and companies are raising money, this side does well. When everyone goes risk-off and deals freeze, it cools down.

05 Whether loans are going bad

Banks set money aside to cover loans that might not get repaid, called the provision for credit losses. In 2025 that was $5.7 billion, a touch below 2024. If the economy weakens and more people fall behind, the bank has to set aside more, and that eats into profit. So the charge-off rate and the provision each quarter are worth watching.

The fine print, made simple

How you trade it on Defcofx

No jargon, just the numbers you need before you place a trade. The headline here is that 0.06 spread, which is genuinely tight for a single stock.

Why the tight spread is a big deal

A 0.06 spread on a roughly $45 share means your round-trip cost on a single share is about six cents. That is small enough to trade BAC tactically around a Fed decision or an earnings release without the spread quietly eating your profit. And because the share price is low, the margin to open a position is very manageable. Here is how it works out at a round $45 per share.

Quick reality check on the numbers

Those examples use a round $45 per share to keep the maths simple. The live price moves, so the real margin will be a little different. Always check the current price and exact margin in MetaTrader 5 first, or run it through the Defcofx margin calculator.

The one idea to hold on to

Think of BAC as a bet on rates

More than almost any other big US bank, Bank of America rises and falls with the interest rate outlook. That makes it wonderfully clear to trade, because you usually know what to watch: the Fed.

It cuts both ways, though. When the Fed surprises everyone by signalling faster rate cuts, BAC can drop harder than the wider market, because traders quickly mark down how much interest income the bank will earn next year. So the same sensitivity that helps it in a rising-rate world can hurt it fast when the mood shifts.

A simple way to hold it in your head

Good news on rates, generally good for BAC. Talk of cuts, generally a headwind. It will not be that clean every single day, but it is the right instinct to start from.

Why here

Why trade Bank of America with Defcofx?

Mostly, it comes down to that spread. At 0.06, BAC is one of the cheapest single stocks to trade on the platform, and cost matters a lot if you are trading it actively around Fed meetings, earnings or shifts in rate guidance. Six cents of round-trip cost does not get in your way.

And because it is a CFD, you are not limited to hoping it goes up. If you think the Fed is about to signal cuts and the bank’s income is going to get squeezed, you can short it just as easily as buying it. No swap fees either way.

Managing your risk

Bank of America reports earnings in January, April, July and October. The number that tends to swing the stock on the day is the guidance for next quarter’s net interest income. Because the business is so geared to rates, even a 1% or 2% change in the full-year NII outlook can move the stock 5% to 8% in a single session. So if you are holding through earnings, set your stop loss before you open the trade, not after.

It is a rate bet and a market bet at the same time

Bank of America is in both the S&P 500 and the Dow, so when the whole market sells off, BAC usually gets dragged down with it, whatever its own results say. The sharpest moves tend to come around Fed meetings, when a surprise lean toward cuts can knock the stock well below the broader market. Keep the Fed’s current stance in view before you hold a big position into an FOMC decision.

None of this is personal advice, just the things worth knowing. For the basics of sizing a position sensibly, the Defcofx risk management guide is a good starting point.

Quick answers

Questions people usually ask

What is the spread on the Bank of America CFD?

It is 0.06 on average, which is one of the tightest single-stock spreads on the platform. Zero commission and no swap fees apply, so that is your full trading cost.

What were Bank of America’s 2025 results?

Full-year 2025 revenue was $113.1 billion, up 7%, with net income of $30.5 billion, up 13%. Fourth-quarter net interest income was $15.8 billion, up 10%, and full-year earnings per share came to $3.81, up 19% on 2024.

What does “asset sensitive” actually mean?

It means the bank earns more when interest rates are higher, because the yield on its loans and investments rises faster than the rate it pays on deposits. So when the Fed raises rates, its net interest income tends to grow, and when the Fed cuts, it tends to shrink. That is the main reason Fed decisions move this stock so much.

What are the four main parts of the business?

Consumer Banking (accounts, loans, mortgages, cards), Global Wealth and Investment Management (Merrill and wealth advice), Global Banking (corporate lending and investment banking), and Global Markets (sales, trading and market-making). All four grew revenue in 2025.

Can I short Bank of America on Defcofx?

Yes. You can open a short position whenever you like, with no swap fees. Traders often short BAC when the Fed is signalling cuts, when income guidance is being lowered, or when loan quality looks like it is deteriorating. Whether to do it is your own call.

How much margin do I need?

10% of the position value. On a round $45 share price, 1 share needs about $4.50, and the 100-share maximum needs about $450, which makes it one of the more accessible max-size trades on the platform. The real figure moves with the live price, so check it in MT5.

How do I get started?

Open a live or demo account, log into MetaTrader 5, then search BOA in the market watch. That is all it takes to start trading.
